Reading Levels & What You Need To Know

What is “Text that Fits?”

Lexile levels rank books by difficulty, based on an analysis of word frequency and sentence length. Books can be like sneakers – the fit matters. A shoe salesman doesn’t offer you an “age 9 or grade 4” basketball shoe; there’s no such thing. Rather, he or she measures your kid’s foot to find his or her individual size.

Linking the right book to the right child helps ensure that all-important fit.

• Subscribe to magazines that are of interest to your child, like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children and National Geographic.

• Make reading a part of life. If a text is relevant to a child’s life, he or she will want to read it.

• Discuss with your child what they read. The analytical skills used in discussion are what your child needs for reading tests, not to mention in life.
