Reading, Writing, & Language Arts

Reading

Reading is an essential part of our school day.  Each week we have one main story, a paired story, and a teacher read aloud.  The stories all relate to the topic for the week.  Our goal is to become strong, fluent readers and build our reading comprehension.

What We’re doing  in Reading:
For the remainder of the school year, we will be focusing on fairytales and fables.  Students will be working on the main idea, story structure, author's purpose, and many other strategies we have learned throughout the year.

Please read with your child each night!  The more your student practices, the better he or she will become.  And remember:

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."
- Margaret Fuller

Writing

We work on writing every day.  Starting in September students will be getting a monthly writing journal.  We will write in these journals and share our writing daily.  Students are reminded to correctly capitalize, write complete sentences, leave finger spaces, and use correct punctuation when writing. We will learn and practice different types of writing throughout the year including informative, narrative, and opinion/persuasive writing.

What We’re doing this week in Writing:
